5 out of 5 stars WOW A Great game at Launch.   November 22, 2005

Can you believe Microsoft has managed to provide two count em two incredible titles at launch? Perfect Dark is the first and this is the second. This game is sooo much fun. And better still, this game is sooo creative. For me personally, there is nothing better than a creative, fun, action packed platformer with Character. This game has those in spades. Finally microsoft has a mario rival. Only this character takes the shape of several different monsters all of which are insanely fun to play. Oh, and by the way. The game is beautiful.

Bottom Line: Buy this and perfect dark and you will have avery merry Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining, well designed adventure   November 27, 2005

I reserved this game for the Xb360 launch after reading good reviews from several major gaming web sites.

The game immediately starts in a sort of crash-course adventure, where you are taught how to control three of the 10 characters available in the game. You have no choice but to spend 15-30 minutes wondering where is the game introduction? What am I doing? At the end, you sort of start from scratch, with a mission to recover those 3 elemental warriors as well as seven others who will help you in completing your quest. Later on you'll realize that this was the best option to get you prepared for the rest of the adventure.

The adventure is linear, especially inside the temples; you just keep going forward defeating the evil trolls. The fights are constant and challenging and with so many warriors in your control, there's almost no repetitive combat.

My favorite part of the game was in the Badlands, where I had the chance to climb on a horse and ride past literally hundreds of computer generated trolls fighting with your soldiers. Looking closer I could see their health status dropping on both the trolls and the guards, then I got too close and the trolls headed in my direction, and my soldiers behind them, amazing AI! With all this happening, I also had to dodge blazing cannonballs that spurt dirt and debris when they hit the ground. Then you add the epic background music (from the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and Kings Choir) and it felt like I was being part of a scene of the Lord of the Rings movie, you really have to see it to believe it.

All emotion aside (my heart is still pumping from that last paragraph) I highly recommend this game, it's pretty impressive for a launch title. It's also not that difficult, which is great for younger kids and mature players alike. The built-in auto-save feature worked effectively by saving your progress immediately after completing an important fight or event. I never found myself backtracking because of a missed save.
By the way, play this game on a high definition TV if you have the chance and witness the difference in quality, you'll be surprised.

This game offers lots of fun for young and adult audiences. The Teen rating is too conservative in my opinion; I never saw anything resembling blood in this game. I guess an E rating would give the impression that this was a kiddie title, a turn-off for some gamers these days, believe it or not.

Anyway, I hope that you find this review helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Rare comes out swinging on the 360 with a beautiful game   November 29, 2005

This game is the best-looking video game I have ever played. Granted, it's the only game I currently have for my Xbox 360, but it's very visually appealing. Certain scenes, such as the Ogre's swamp, have huge characters on the screen with amazing detail that simply would not be possible on lesser consoles.

The game is fun to play, and that is its main selling point. All ten elemental warriors - characters you morph into and play as - have different strenghts, weaknesses, and abilities, and to beat the game one must use all ten effectively. From climbing an ice wall with Chilla to swimming underwater with Deep Blue, the variey is astounding. In battle sequences, too, the variety of the warriors is great. The choices range from punching combos with Pummel Weed to bowling with Major Ruin or playing sniper with Chilla.

If there's a reason not to rate this 5 stars, it's the replayability factor. Once you've beaten Thorn - the evil troll king - and gotten all 1,000 gamer points the game has to offer, it loses some of its appeal.

Overall, though, this is a great game and I would highly recommend it to any player of any age.

4 out of 5 stars My favorite XBox 360 game for solo play   January 13, 2006

Kameo is a fantasy-based adventure in which you play the role of an elven princess who is responsible for rescuing her family from captivity. In your quest to free your relatives, you must seek out and obtain several elements of power, each of which gives you the ability to morph into a new character with unique abilities.

This ability to change forms is a great gaming device that keeps the game interesting by allowing you to choose from several different play styles. In some cases, you are forced to morph into a certain form to defeat specific obstacles(especially in the built-in training challenges that immediately follow your acquisition of a new element), but for the most part, the game has an open style that allows you to morph into your favorite characters and run with them.

Kameo's graphics are beautiful and the environment is immersive. The story is also entertaining and keeps you engaged. The game's opening challenge (which throws you into a pitched battle with 3 elemental forms to choose from) can be a little overwhelming, but once you've fumbled your way through it, the game takes a much more leisurely progression that allows you to advance at your own pace and enjoy the story.

This game has a limited multiplayer mode that allows you to replay specific boss battles with another local or online player (after you have unlocked these battles in solo play). I found, however, that I had more fun playing the game in single-player questing mode.

My only criticism of the game is the seeming impossibility of unlocking some of the game's achievements, which require you to obtain a set number of battle points during each of the key boss battles. You obtain these points by defeating your opponents using "brutal" methods, taking out as many as possible during a short period of time, and by avoiding any damage (which decreases your point total). Presumably it's possible to obtain an "A" grade and unlock an achievement for each of these battles, but after several attempts, I can't seem to get any higher than a "B" (which is a little too reminiscent of my experiences with college physics.)

4 out of 5 stars Good game for the family   March 2, 2006

This is a nice game to add that is more inclusive than other launch titles for younger family members. The graphics are fantastic (especially on a higher quality flat screen) and the controls are easy to learn. The story is engaging and not overly taxing - again allowing for younger members to play and have fun (while not worrying about too much violence though there is plenty of "fantasy" violence but it is not overly gruesome).
