Call of Duty 4...amazing November 7, 2007 K. Schade (Highland Lakes, NJ United States) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Simply amazing, call of duty 4 blows away its prior games and launches first person shooters into a whole new realm of realism. Ever action by the characters is realistic. The AI in this game is...well...to die for. Hardly was there a moment in which I noticed to characters "die" in the same fashion. Everything moved to seamlessly. There was hardly a moment my heart was not pounding. An incredible buy.
Great game but I suck November 9, 2007 T. Luong (Lake Forest, CA United States) 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I played COD1-2 on PC and I had years of fun. So I went to Microcenter to buy COD4 but it's sold out. Since I bought my PS3 10 months ago but I owned just 3 games and I am not good playing with the controller; The salesguy convinced me to try this game on PS3. Well I thought, I will never be good if I don't give it time to practice. Then here I am ... The practice session was a mess. I admit I am better with a mouse than with a controller. I took me a minute where the best time was 15 sec, the sergeant also called me trash. I completed the first mission on the boat by dying 3 times on the easiest level. Wow, game play was smooth and graphic and sound fx was realistic on 37" LCD HDTV, better than playing on 20" monitor. My wife was pissed of because she cannot watch her heroes tv show. Maybe I should buy another bigger tv. Anyway I love this game and will spend a lot of time with it for the months to come. You will see me online soon when I am familiar with the controller.
Fantastic Game for the PS3! November 13, 2007 SoCalReviews (Los Angeles, CA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
After reading the numerous positive online reviews for a week I decided to purchase this game for the PS3. Soon after arriving home from the store I wanted to test it out just for a few minutes and ended up playing it for almost three hours straight. I had to stop when the PS3 controller needed to be recharged. It is seldom that a game grabs my attention so much but the level of graphical detail and realism in this game sets it apart as one of the better games I have played on any system. The amazingly realistic graphics and sound along with responsive and easy to learn controls make this game a winner. Once you have played the single player campaign for a while you will also appreciate the excellent online game action which is equally fast, fun and furious. Since the PS3 system came out last year in 2006 I have been reading about how everyone is waiting for the new breed of console based video games that really show off the power of the next generation systems. Over the past year there have been a few phenomenal releases for the PS3 that have stood out like Resistance: Fall of Man and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. COD4: Modern Warfare is a game that will re-define gaming on the next generation consoles and at the time of this review it is one the best games if not the best game available for the PS3 console.
I had goose bumps in the middle of gameplay. November 16, 2007 The Bigmac (White Plains, MD) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Mesmerizing. The controls are simply perfect with the exception of the SPRINT button which I'll get to later. It is so well designed and intuitive. It gives you the widest range of choices I've ever seen difficulty wise. Are you a seasoned player? Choose an advanced level of difficulty and you'll love it. Are you a newbie to 1st person shooters? Choose the easiest setting and you'll love it. I have only played 2 first person shooters ever because if they are not very well executed controller and frame rate wise, I get headaches because of motion sickness. Halo 3 is one of them. This is the other one. If you;re a newbie to this genre like myself, you'll LOVE this game. They'll take you almost by the hand through the entire game with a special compass so you always know where you're supposed to go. And you can always follow you NPC teammates as well. This is the best shooter I've ever played. The graphic detail is just ridiculous. You really feel like it's happening in real life. Walking with all your senses alert, crouching a little, with a pack of marines raiding rooms, going out to little alleys, F14's roar over your head, the screen shakes, I've never had goose bumps while playing a game before. While you actually shoot. You're on the border of distraction from the actual game because everything looks just gorgeous. Just one gripe: Deep into the game some missions become a little frustrating because you loose over and over again, and have to play the same part over and over again, which is not that bad because playing them is A LOT of fun but sometimes it may become a little annoying, specially since in the level it happened to me, it was because a simple design flaw: In order to sprint you need to maintain L3 pressed while moving and truth to be told, it's just not that practical and a little uncomfortable. ________________________ Edit: It's been about a year since I reviewed this game. Now I realized I missed a HUGE element in my review: Multiplayer. Why did I not mention it before? because before this game, I had never played am online shooter before. I just bought the game for the single player campaign mode and once I beat it, I filed it on my shelf for about 4 months. Until one day, some online friends talked me into giving the online multiplayer a shot (no pun intended). Let me tell you: The multiplayer in this game BLEW MY MIND. It's like an online shooter with RPG elements. You upgrade your rank, you gain perks, you create character classes and the gameplay...Absolutely flawless. It was then when I realized that beating the single player campaign mode was just scratching the surface. To this date, almost a year since I purchased this game, I play about 2 or 3 hours EVERYDAY. No exceptions. This game is by far the Best Game I've ever played in my life and needless to say, the best current generation title for any console. It's literally, 2 games in one. Think about it: A game that 1 year after the initial purchase, keeps you coming back for more on a daily basis? That's a hell of a value in you purchase. To this date, the vast majority of gamers around the world consider this game is the best shooter ever made. (Yes, that includes Halo).
Great game with multiplayer better than Halo 3! December 4, 2007 J. P. Purcell (Missouri, USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Call of Duty 4 for the Playstation 3 is the best first person shooter available for the system, and luckily it's the best first person shooter currently out on ANY system. I don't see a first person shooter coming out anytime soon that could rival it, which is until Killzone 2 comes out (the sequel to Sony's best selling first person shooter, Killzone). There are two ways to look at Call of Duty 4; the single player and the multiplayer. I will begin with the single player. Single Player: Amazing visuals and surround sound help to bring you into the action of a modern military story. You play more than one character throughout the game, four to be exact, that spans an international story of nuclear weapons and terrorists. The game is presented in a cinematic style that the developers have used in the past. Unfortunately they also use their old tricks of scripted enemy "spawning" where you will face seemingly endless hordes of bad guys until you move up in the level enough to reach a point that triggers them to stop coming. This can be increasingly difficult and frustrating at higher difficulty levels but if you play on Normal difficulty you should be just fine with a good balance of challenge and fun. The game does a great job of creating drama with the story, all without the use of traditional cutscenes. It's always presented through "your eyes" which can really help bring you into the story and helps you feel what that character is feeling. The game comes to an amazing climax at the end and is one of the best videogame endings I have ever witnessed. And speaking of the ending, when you finish it, make sure that you sit through the credits that scroll by because you will get a BONUS LEVEL that is purely awesome. Multiplayer: This is where the game REALLY shines and in my opinion is worth the full price of game for this alone. Chocked full of different game modes I don't see anyone getting bored of this anytime soon. It has the ability to play in a local LAN, split screen or even online over the Playstation Network FOR FREE. The Playstation Network has no subscription cost which is great. It even supports voice chat! I personally use a Bluetooth headset from Motorola for online voice chat and it works great. The PS3 also will allow you to use a USB headset if you prefer. Infinity Ward (the game developers) have also done console gamers a real treat by putting in a realism mode into the game called "hardcore" mode. This mode is what I play exclusively. It gets rid of the HUD (heads up display), increases bullet damage, and gives the players miniscule health among other things. It makes you play more realistically and makes it so every action counts because one bullet wound can mean the end of the game for you. My favorite game type is called Search and Destroy where one team must plant a bomb on one of two targets while the other team defends both targets. There are many, many more game types to play however. Multiplayer also has a "leveling up" system where it gives you points for your kills and gives points for other things you can do in the game, like calling in a helicopter (or shooting down an enemy helicopter), planting a bomb, killing an enemy with a "cooked" grenade, among other clever things the developers have thought we may do in a game. After you have accumulated enough points you can unlock higher ranks which gives you more weapons, new "perks", and other added benefits. Perks are a system that gives your player attributes that will help your game, such as increased accuracy, the ability to carry two weapons, increased bullet damage, extra grenades, and many more. These perks really add to the customizability of your character and can make everyone you encounter unique to their own playing style. The multiplayer can become highly addictive unlocking higher ranks and new weapons! Halo gets all of the praise for first person shooters like they invented them or something, but Infinity Ward has outdone that game with superior graphics and superior multiplayer fun in Call of Duty 4.
