5 out of 5 stars One of the best strategy titles in years   February 11, 2008

Groundbreaking? Revolutionary? Where do you even start to describe a game like Sins? As a strategy game it's a completely new take on the genre. As a the first game from a brand new indie developer it's downright unprecedented in it's scope, ambition, polish, and overall quality.

It's rather difficult to describe a game like Sins, as you have quite certainly never played anything like it. It's a real time strategy, but if you're expecting Starcraft or Homeworld you will be sorely disappointed. In its scope an pacing the game plays much more like another Stardock game, Galactic Civ 2.

What makes this game so fantastic is its sheer, uncompromising depth. Traditional RTS games look practically primitive next to Sins. This is a complex game that makes absolutely no apologies for being such. While this may be off-putting for those expecting a traditional RTS click-fest, it makes it all that much sweeter to the gamers who it is really targeted at, 4X fans.

If the game's depth elevates it above traditional RTS titles, it's the visual immersion that elevates it above traditional 4X games. A grid of static images that most turn based 4X games offer you doesn't even come close to the experience of seeing a fleet of hundreds of ships ranging from 10m long fighters to 1km long capital ships maneuvering around a massive planet all rendered to scale. In a word, Sins of the Solar Empire is gorgeous.

This is not a game for everyone. Today's console crowd weened on fast paced shooters and action titles will likely not have the patience for it. For the fans hardcore strategy that this game is aimed at though, Sins is pure gold and quite possibly the best, and most groundbreaking game to come to this genre in years.

When an Indie game outsells Call of Duty 4 and the Orange Box in it's first month, a gamer has to take note. Sins of a Solar Empire (awesome title by the way) is grand in scope, and may be intimidating to gamers unfamiliar with the RT4X genre, but when you get used to ruling several planets, you'll discover an incredibly deep strategic experience. A story spanning thousands of years and several star systems brings all the incredible gameplay aspects together, resulting in a tight, polished experience that could please even a hardcore FPS addict (me)

The only caveat so far, the interface is not as streamlined as it could be.

All in all, one of the best indie titles available on PC, buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Not great, but a good start.   April 28, 2008

First off, this game is not a "Master of Orion" style game in any way. It's far more comparable to Homeworld -- it's a space based RTS game.

Like most RTS games, the tech trees are fairly shallow with limited options and units are not customizable beyond researching new techs for them. There are three fairly similar races which are also not customizable.

However, it's not all bad news.

Although you'll likely be spending a lot of focus on overseeing large battles between fleets, there's also a lot of room to conduct secondary operations -- sending smaller strike teams out while the enemy is hopefully preoccupied with your main fleet. A lot of RTS games simply don't reward this sort of thing very well but in Sins, it opens up a lot of strategic options.

Multiplayer is integrated and well supported, including a feature that lets you save and resume multiplayer games. This is something that RTS gamers have been asking for for years.

Games can easily last several hours, depending on how many players and how big of a game you wanted. Personally, I enjoy the option of having a "big game" rather than simply the small map 15-minute skirmishes most RTS games offer.

The AI is pretty good and actually pretty amusing to have on your team. AIs will communicate with each other through standard chat and will try to coordinate with you and each other. (Enemy AI, on the other hand, tends to be annoying by making constant demands. This is the "diplomacy" aspect of the game and frankly it would probably be more fun without it.)

Graphics are very nice, should you choose to zoom in far enough to see them all, although the only reason to zoom in that far is to look at the graphics. It's generally more practical to be zoomed out far enough that ships are dots.

I think the bottom line for me is that I see this game as a good start. It's really nothing new. Real time space based empire games have been done before and arguably have been done better. However, I see this game as having a strong potential as a platform that they can build on. I don't regret my purchase but I'm more keenly interested in what they have in mind for Sins of a Solar Empire II. Deeper tech trees? More races? Customizable ships and races? There's a lot of room to expand and I hope they continue to build on it.

2 out of 5 stars Can you say Master of Orion?   May 26, 2008

After playing this for the last few days (over 24 hours of actual game play) I have come to the conclusion that this is just a paired down version of Master of Orion 3. Yes the graphics are nicer but the game has only one difference from MoO3, it isn't as customizable. In MoO you can create your own ships, the weapons you want, shields, etc. In Sins you have a few types already set up for you and that is it. The graphics are really nice. I don't know what the reviewers are talking about when they say the graphics are really bad but I'm running this on an ancient Athlon64-3200 with an 8800GS video card and the graphics are great. Overall I only rated this two stars because the only thing new are the improved graphics. Other than that this game pales in comparison to Master of Orion 3.

1 out of 5 stars For hardcore real time strategy players ONLY   April 5, 2008

Sins of a solar empire is for dedicated RTS gamers and RTS gamers only.
The game has no campaign mode, so don't expect a good story, which would have made it so much better. The music goes from okay to okay, its mediocore. The game play is just ugly, I should'nt have to say anything you saw for yourself on the gameplay pics they show you. What killed it the most was the tutorial modes. you will spending a long time just to understand combat, space mining, and planet taxation which is MIND BOGOLLING BORING. Sins was not fun for me and should'nt be, it had the potential to be great; if not wonderful. Hopefully EA will buy this company and give it a much need face lift.
