RTS to the next level! February 8, 2008 Tony C. Luu 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Sins is a 4X type game that encorporates real time strategy in a seamless and immersive gameplay style. There is nothing like it, but it I had to describe it, I would say it is kind of like Master of Orion/Galciv/Starcraft blended together into a whole new experience. The zoom ability lets you see the smallest craft in your fleet all the way out to the empire that you control - and each and every level can be hand managed if you like micromanagement, or placed on autopilot. Capitol ship abilities are awesome and make you want to control each and every one in your empire personally. Definitely one of those great games that you play on and on without realizing how much time has already passed.
Very Impressive February 10, 2008 anachreon 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
Sins of a Solar Empire ("SoaSE") is an instant classic. It breaks new ground in the real time strategy genre by blending the broad scope of a 4X civilization-management game with the fine-grained space battles of a game like Homeworld. With the flick of your mouse's scroll wheel, you can go from looking at your empire of dozens of planets, all the way down to observing individual ships in your fleets, all rendered in beautiful 3D. To be sure, SoaSE is a hybrid game - its battles do not have the depth of Homeworld, and it's civilization management doesn't have the level of micromanagement of a game like Civilization 4. But this is part of what makes SoaSE so brilliant. It blends both genres in a way that is manageable and extremely entertaining for the player with an interface that is intuitive and relatively unobtrusive. One of the great things about the game is that you can choose how fast or how slow you want it to play. For beginning players, in order not to get overwhelmed, the option to turn the game speed down is a life saver. Graphically, the game is very high quality though not envelope-pushing. I am perfectly happy with the game's graphics, and amazed at how scaleable the engine is - it runs beautifully on my three year old Dell Inspiron with a GeForce Go 6800 at 1680x1050 with 2x Anti-Ailiasing. And the game has never crashed on me - not once. If you're a fan of strategy - heck, even if you're not - you owe it to yourself to buy this game. It's top quality all the way.
Excellent game that no PC gamer should miss out on. March 4, 2008 G. Yin 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Sins is an amazing piece of work. This game is a marvelous epic of a space strategy game that combines 4x gameplay with real time gameplay. Play this game at your own risk! Start a game among friends and you will absolutely play into the wee hours of the next morning, and you wont even regret it. Not too bad for 40 dollars a box is it?
Public Service Announcement...this game will consume you! March 14, 2008 Chauncey M. Templeton (Virginia, USA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'll make this short and to the point (I desperately need sleep). This is the most addicting game I have played in years. I have never stayed up for more than a 24 hour period strait (give or take an hour). Between normal life activities(job, appointments, family responsibility, eating, etc.) I played this game allowing me to stay awake for over two days strait! This is not normal for me. I just came home from the past two days and wanted an easy way to unwind. Only problem is, my unwinding is being interrupted by my now useless alarm clock as I'm already up. This game should come with a warning. Maybe, "Play only on the weekends" or "Don't forget to feed and walk the dog". My only quibbles: Make the alien races even more different from the humans. More variety in the ship types and classes. More ships! I'm sure patches or an add on would take care of my minor desires. I'm also sure more content would push me to even greater extremes of sleeplessness. Stop reading this now.
dissapointed March 19, 2008 Tom Servo (Oregon City, Oregon USA) 3 out of 33 found this review helpful
this is the worst game EVER all it amounts to is a click fest on tiny unresponsive icons. You Cant really play the game in the total close up mode . ie: you rarely get to see the nice close ups of the ships. The upgrade and tech trees stink and you cant build any thing , including the ships you need. The game is not nearly as good as Galactic Civilations II. I have spent about 12 hrs of last 24 trying to figure this loss out. al lyou do is respond to "pirate attacks", over and over etc. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! look for Galactic Civ II on sale! It has many of the same features and works much smoother and more logically!
