Awesome Guitar May 23, 2008 Kratos We LOVE this guitar. It works well with both Rock Band and Guitar Hero 3. We actually will pick this guitar up before the Rock Band guitar. The strumming bar is not as stiff and clicks, whereas the fret buttons don't click. More like the Guitar Hero guitars we are use to playing. It isn't as fun when the ending bonuses come but well worth it. Thinking of buying another one to replace the Rock Band guitar.
Play 2 games for the price of 1 guitar! May 23, 2008 Jason B (California) Like every other PS3 owner, I was looking for a guitar that was compatible with BOTH rockband and GH3...this one gets the job done. I've had no issues with syncing or using the guitar like others. I'll point out what I've noticed... Negatives: -awkward looking, REALLY looks like a toy guitar; but then again, it is. -the neck of the guitar is very thick. -awkward toggle "d-pad" -NOT lefty friendly -no fret buttons at the neck base like RB fender strat guitar. Positives: -compatible w/ rockband AND GH3 -mini usb port for recharging Unique features: -clicking strum; GH3 owners will like that feature. -whammy bar spring feels well constructed. -fret buttons are spaced out. I think it basically comes down to is whether you're willing to adapt to the guitar. If you want a replica of the guitar you're used to, then buy that exact one. However, if compatibility is what you want, consider this one...it doesn't take long to get used to the different configuration...adapt and step "outside of the box"! The person who uses it the most will probably be your guests anyways. If you're worried about quality then buy the available extended warranty. I had to return a fender strat because the whammy bar spring went out...the replacement has the same issue, just a matter of time before it goes poof! The issue of quality is debatable.
2nd Time's the charm..... May 26, 2008 J. Anderson (Fort Lauderdale) I had this Nyko Frontman on pre-order so I guess got one of the first off the assembly line. Big mistake! When I finally found the proper instructions for getting it synced (Nyko's were wrong...how does THAT happen!!??) it worked for a little while, but soon started to lose sync randomly and I was hating it. Thankfully, Amazon was great about it and sent me a new one right away. I am VERY happy now because, for me, the setup and feel of the buttons is far superior to the Harmonix guitar that ships with the game, and now the replacement one Amazon sent works flawlessly.
The feel is a preference, but beware of QUALITY issues June 2, 2008 Busy Mom (United States) TO CLICK OR NOT TO CLICK Other reviewers have already covered the sometimes subjective pros and cons of this guitar. IMO, being that we're used to our Rock Band Fender, (and we don't play Guitar Hero), the clicking of the strum bar is not a plus, but an annoyance. It's especially noticeable if you're playing a different guitar and are sitting near someone else who's playing the Nyko -- sometimes it's easy to get distracted with their clicking, unless the music is cranked up. Personally, I don't even like hearing that clicking when I'm playing the Nyko myself -- I don't see a need for it. COMPATIBILITY The Nyko has the obvious benefit of being compatible w/ Guitar Hero, but frankly after having Rock Band, I don't know why we'd want to buy Guitar Hero anyway since we like the instrument variety. FEEL/FUNCTION I can say that after initially going for the Nyko ("cool!" design and light show on the box), my teens now vie for the Fender -- they prefer the feel of the Fender and its button spacing (so do I). Like another reviewer mentioned, the buttons do not reach to the edge of the fret bar, so the target is smaller and easier to miss when we're playing fast, and the rounded buttons are easy to slip off of too often, esp for anyone whose hands ever perspire! QUALITY ISSUE: One red flag I can offer you: the Fender has gotten a lot more use and has maintained its "springy-ness" well, yet our Nyko already has a whammy bar that drops down (via the force of gravity) and can no longer be positioned. An indication of the quality of construction, on top of having to return our first Nyko because of its receiver box had a button caved in and the guitar wouldn't sync. FUNCTION ISSUE: I know at least 1 other reviewer has noticed the problem with the strum bar, where if you try to strum up like you're supposedly able to do, you do not get credited correctly. I experienced it, and I've watched more than once while another player, during a long stretch of rapid repetitive notes (e.g., Hiway Star), dropped down the score bar and FAILED, even though the passing color bars were lighting up (to indicate success), and the notes were audible (to indicate success)... oh, and the clicking of his strum bar seemed to be on beat. ;) We figured out that we must only strum down, or else Rock Band won't count it. Overall, if you just can't find an extra guitar for Rock Band, this one does suffice, but I'd buy an extra Fender instead, given a choice. Good luck!
Good, but still the second best guitar controller out there June 5, 2008 K. Landau (California) My first experience with any Guitar game was Guitar Hero III on the Wii. That controller absolutely spoiled me because it was PERFECT. Had a great build quality, the buttons had a good feel, the weight was right, etc. When I upgraded to a PS3 for Rock Band, I was seriously disappointed with the Fender guitar controller. Like most people, I really missed the "clicky" strum bar. I felt the silent, mushy strummer on the Fender made it more difficult to hit a lot of successive notes quickly. On the other hand, I really like the look of the Fender. It's realistic looking and the fret buttons are great. I went on the hunt for an extra controller so my friends and I could play as a full band and figured I would get soemething that would allow me to play Guitar Hero as well! Enter the Nyko Frontman. First thing's first...Hooray for the CLICK! It makes a huge difference for me in playing more difficult songs. My scores improved immediately and I no longer felt like I was being cheated out of notes that I knew I could hit due to a crappy strummer. Beyond that I have to say the build quality seems cheap. It really looks and feels like a plastic toy (and yes I know it is) when compared to the Wii and Fender controllers. They have a more authentic look and feel to them. Also, I was unable to get the Nyko to work through a powered USB hub connected to my PS3. I had no issue when plugging it directly in but with the hub, it would synch fine (according to the lights) but I could not control anything. I'm assuming that I either missed something or that it's just a problem with my controller. Lastly, the neck of this controller is shorter than the Fender. This adds to the overall "toy" feel of it in my opinion for us adults. Overall I am very happy with the performance of the Nyko. In game (where it counts) the thing has performed flawlessly and has made me fall in love with Rock Band all over again now that I actually have a chance at perfecting the songs. It's not perfect but works as advertised. I prefer it over the Fender but so far, nothing has matched the Wii's controller for looks, feel and performance.
