All around greatness September 26, 2007 M. Allen (Seattle, Wa United States) 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
The original HALO is what caused me to trade in my Sony for an XBOX, HALO was that good. HALO 2 on the other hand was traded in on the same day it was released, the graphics were simply old and no good. However, I played HALO 3 yesterday for 3 hours on co-op, and the game is truly great. Are there better graphics in other games, yes, but overall they improved the graphics on this game to keep me happy. The action as always is intense and so far the game has not let me down. I'll be finished with the story by this evening, but this game is a keeper.
Very far from what it should have been. September 27, 2007 Jon (UK) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
After an hour with Halo 3 my initial reaction was "so what?...big deal!". The gameplay seemed like a slurred and half-hearted version of Halo's 1&2, the graphics were scarcely next gen (compare with Gears Of War and Bioshock), the storyline wasn't gripping and the whole thing kind of lamely chugged along. There was little or no responsiveness and I felt cheated by the OTT hype. Persisting with the Halo 3, however, eventually brought rewards--albeit not the Tiffany diamond sized ones I was expecting but nevertheless they were satisfactory. I did get lost in the game and managed to ignore the bland indoor environments and the constant glitches . The pop-ups even melted away as I wasted squadrons of alien slime. The review for this game then runs thus: it's a well above average FPS which will entertain you for a fair while. The multiplayer options are great and the replay is value is pretty good. Those are the straightforward points if you ignore that other whopping, gargantuan issue. Namely, is this a fitting end to the Halo series? Well, in that case the answer is `no' about 3500 times. On that score the game is shoddy and truly disappoints. There is hardly a sense that you're even playing a title worthy to be called Halo. If you've played and loved the other games then I bet you'll be off-loading this baby soon. The lousy programming, the sense of ennui, the collapse of creativity and the dull story will probably turn your stomach. It's the biggest let down for quite some time and is fairly insulting to the gamers who've been eagerly waiting for it.
Kind of disappointing... September 29, 2007 Larry (Hayward, CA United States) 10 out of 12 found this review helpful
Ah, crap... I've been waiting for this title for years, and all I got was a SHORT rehash of Halo 1 & 2. Not much new here. Gameplay was easy and repetitive and there wasn't a decent story arc. My main problem is with the length of the single person campaign. I finished the thing in under 10 hours of gameplay. Come on, Microsoft! Not all of us want XBox live, and I don't appreciate getting pushed into getting it. Just give me a decent game that I can sit and play for a few hours.
Beware...unplayable for some October 3, 2007 John C. Crawford (lake charles, LA United States) 10 out of 46 found this review helpful
I continue to get "clean disk" popup at end of the first stage transition no matter how many different new disk I use, or how cleared my cache is, or how formatted my hard drive is...while playing campaign.
Pure video gaming bliss September 25, 2007 Daniel S. Boucher (Portland, ME) 9 out of 18 found this review helpful
Everything that I love about gaming is available in this one little box. Great story? Check. Fantatic action? Check. Detachable Warthog guns? Check. Epic ending (be sure and watch after the credits!)? Check. The Elite and humans have joined forces since the Arbiter being cast out in Halo 2. Disgraced and distubed by the truth behind the halos he rallied allies and struck a civil war against the covenant. Master chief is now forced to work with the Arbiter who together are burdened with the task of saving the world from total anihilation. What ensues is the best gaming bliss, movie theater experience that I have ever had the pleasure to endure. I loved Halo, hated Halo 2 and can't say enough about Halo 3. The visuals in Halo 3 are absolutely stunning! Of course I have a 42" LCD Flatscreen HD TV, but even on my sons regular TV it was purely georgeous. The voice acting and onscreen cinematics will/have set the mark for other games to aspire to. When Microsoft first acquired Bungie after the first Halo, I have to admit that I was a bit concerned about the quality of future games from them, thinking that MS would be about money first and quality second and sad to say, Halo 2 confirmed my worst fears. I was on the wire about Halo 3 and refused to listen to any of the hype surrounding it this time around and I have to say that I have never been happier about being proved wrong. Everything about this game is quality. The co-op (split-screen or multi-link) allows for upto 4 players, each playing as a different character from the game. I'm not an online gammer (sick of getting killed 2 seconds after entering a map by some punk named deathmaster) and I was concerned that Bungie might have focused more on the multi-playing aspect like so many other game makers out there today, but I was extremely pleased by the length and quality and fulfillment of playing Halo 3 solo. I know I'm not the only one that does not enjoy playing online, so if you, like me would rather play solo or you can't live without online multi-player access, then don't be afraid to drop $60 on this game. Like Bioshock, pure fun, pure quality. Just buy it already.
