Purchased on May 11 and it's broken on June 8... June 14, 2007 12 out of 18 found this review helpful
I was a proud owner of the 360. This is my second 360, one Elite and one Premium. These systems are very cheaply made and use cheap parts. My Premium got the Red Ring of Death a few months ago and traded it in. I was so angry after spending all my money for all of it. Now I buy the Elite on the 11th of May and it's done, already. You have probably heard about rumors of the Elite having a new quieter Ben Q DVD Drive. It appears that some received this drive in the Xbox Forums. Of course, I got the more common Elite with the Hitachi LG Drive. After finishing some Gears on June 8 and exited to the dashboard, the disk drive made a loud, grinding noise as the disk slowed down. It was a sound I had never heard in the 3 weeks I had the Elite or on my Premium unit. I tried Gears again and appeared to do it again. Not playing the Elite a few days after this problem, I tried it again and now the disks don't read at all. Even if I look at the bottom of the dashboard where you can open/close the tray, it comes up as disk unreadable. I purchased my Elite with a March 3, 07 manufacture date and purchased it at Target. Thank god Target gives 90 day exchanges. Also, I also had the problem on the first day I got the Elite that I could not recover my profile since my email and password don't exist or something like that. I was on the phone with Xbox with 2 different guys on two different days. The first guy didn't know what the heck he was doing. He sent me to Passport.com and told me to send them an email which the email didn't help. The next guy (by the way, I waited 1 hour to get a hold of this guy because the line was packed) new everything. He helped me reset my password and re-confirm my email which also linked my profile to Xbox.com. (I had problems linking my profile with my premium.) Otherwise, it's a decent console with fantastic games and one of the best controllers I've seen. Make sure you get the extended warranty for $59. It is worth it since the Elite is still using the same hardware as the premium. Still noisy and same cheap DVD drive unless you are lucky to get the Ben Q. To clear up a misconception, the extended warranty adds to your already included one year manufacture warranty totaling three years of protection. For anyone who also wants to know, the Elite has no built in HD-DVD Drive and requires an add-on for $199 and does not include built in wireless. Wireless also requires an additional add-on for $99. These two accessories only come in white and as from what I know are not planned to come in black. To me, this system really isn't Elite. It is a Premium system with a 120GB HDD and HDMI. It comes almost to the same price if you bought a Premium 360 and a 120 GB HDD. The price would come to $480 also. The only thing you would miss out on is HDMI. Great games, poor console. Wait until September and Microsoft will be shipping ALL Elites with Ben Q DVD drives and a 65nm chip instead of the 90nm chip. The 65nm chip will run cooler and will last longer. Hope this helps you out. I am not pleased, but I will stay with Microsoft because of Xbox Live. I got the warranty so I am safe...
Buyer beware... October 24, 2007 J. Hillis 12 out of 30 found this review helpful
I don't have much to add that hasn't been said already here. I want to own an Xbox 360. Games like Bioshock, Mass Effect, and Infinite Undiscovery are/will be amazing. Microsoft has failed to create a decent gaming machine. 1. This thing is so loud. We had to crank up the TV just to hear Bioshock or any HDDVD we watched. My PS3 is whisper quiet on the other hand. 2. Mine starting freezing on day three while showing some friends Bioshock. It began to freeze all the time afterward, even while searching for demos to download etc. 3. I sent mine back to Amazon and received a full refund after they found it to be defective. Which was promptly done by Amazon. I say this as a nonfanboy. The Xbox360 is an insult to gamers. They spend so much money buying up exclusives and are providing some great games lately but can't provide us with a decent gaming machine to play them on. I 'want' to own an Xbox360 but I refuse to buy another until they bring the quality.
Made me reqret purchasing the Playstation 3 May 6, 2008 J.S. Knapp (Harrisburg, PA) 12 out of 19 found this review helpful
Microsoft and Xbox fans the world around: I owe you an apology. I have been scowling at Xbox and Xbox owners since it hit the market. "It's not as good as Playstation - it won't last" I always said. Then the Xbox 360 came around, and I skulked into a corner, clutching my Playstation 2. "PS3 is around the corner - it'll show you..." A few months after PS3 hit shelves (more than a year after Xbox 360 came to market) I took posession of a new Playstation. The PS3 made me change my mind. Months later I had six games, and a Blockbuster Video (tm) membership card collecting dust. There was nothing to play! No new games on the horizon, nothing catering to my interests. I finally broke down, grabbed the credit card and bought an Xbox 360 Elite. With a heavy heart I say: I love it. I now have nearly three times that of my Playstation 3 collection just a few months later. I have just as many Xbox peripherals as I do the Playstation, and the recent blockbuster, best-selling titles I have purchased for the Xbox instead of the Playstation. This is because of the enchantment of the Xbox "Achievement" scoring system, rewarding the player with (unfortunately useless) global points for making various accomplishments in every Xbox 360 title. I have begun researching the PS3's "barely used" resale value. Besides playing games - and there are tons to choose from - the Xbox is well-built to use the internet. Though I myself am not a big online-gaming enthusiast, I can still use it to upgrade games, download visual content for background themes and the like. I have even begun downloading TV shows. The system allows you to establish 1-on-1 chat rooms, which I use often to talk to my brother who lives cross-country. We can catch up on current events while playing two different games. The PS3 allows you to chat, but you can't do anything else while chatting. Unfortunately, the Elite has one major limitation. In fact, the feature that makes this system "Elite" is it's biggest drawback - the 120 gb harddrive. My PS3 only has 40 gb's, and I've already packed it with MP3's and movies (honestly - what else is it good for??) What drew me to purchase the Elite Xbox (besides it's black color which blends much better into home-entertainment setups) was it's large storage capability. However, Microsoft has made it impossible to download or copy any music content onto the Harddrive. The only way to import music is to "burn" it from a CD. Obviously the intent here is to discourage piracy, but it has also alienated any iTunes subscribers or the like. I probably would have been just as happy with a standard Xbox 360. I still have over 100 gigs available! Thus the benefit of the Elite is to be able to download lots of game content, pictures, videos, etc. This comes at a cost, as very few of these downloads are free. Take that into consideration before you buy. System malfunctions seem to be rare - a few game crashes here and there. I am sympathetic to earlier owners of malfunctioning systems. As of this writing, May 2008, I'd say you'd be "good to go" buying one of these systems. Microsoft I apologize. I've complained about a fair amount of money I've given you over the years, but I have to confess - you did this one right. I look forward to many, many more hours of hardcore, balls-to-the-wall gaming. Look for me online - my gamertag is "Vipera Raddei!"
Unreliable June 27, 2008 Susan Sawyer (Atlanta) 12 out of 22 found this review helpful
When it works, its a great product. But be warned - the red ring of death is still a problem. Buy this product at your own risk. Yes, microsoft will repair the x-box. However, they will no longer send a box (coffin) for your unit. So if you buy an xbox, keep your original packaging for when (not if) the red ring of death hits your unit. They do pay for postage and 1 month of xbox live. Both the Wii and Playstation are much better products in terms of reliability. Microsoft is already losing a lot of money on the repairs. It will be interesting to see if they try to start limiting the warranty period in the future. They claimed at their shareholder meeting the repairs are decreasing. Well, my xbox elite is less than 6 months old and aready needs repairing.

Yes, the Xbox is great fun and has the most advanced online features if it only works... After only 6 weeks of moderate use I experienced the famous "Red Ring of Death" and with lots of apologies from Microsoft it took 3 weeks to exchange a brand new one and get a "refurbished" one. Unfortunately this refurbished console arrived non-functional (again RROD. So more empathy more apologies, but still I had to send in the console (where MS has a smooth and cost-free system in place, so they must do it quite often) and in an separate shipment at my own cost the power supply (all under warranty). Another 3 weeks and I am still waiting.. So far I paid over a thousand dollar for console and games and it is more time for repair than I ever had for gaming. If you want to risk it, go ahead. It can be lots of fun, but I am done with Microsoft and will get me a Playstation 3.
