Not worth the money January 18, 2008 Moores 7 out of 18 found this review helpful
This all in all is a terrible game. It is not fun and you only kill about 20 people. You sneak around and listen to peoples conversations. This is probably my least favorite 360 game.
Great graphics, irritating gameplay - worst next-gen title I've played January 25, 2008 Mugwomp McGillicuddy (Redwood City, CA United States) 7 out of 23 found this review helpful
First off: I was very disappointed in the complete lack of immersion of AC. From the box I thought I was buying a game set in the 1100's. But no, the ridiculous concept is "genetic time travel" regarding a kidnapped bartender, so expect little digital garbles, a virtual reality theme and instead of health points, the "synchronization meter", instead of simply loading a save you are loading a memory, etc., etc. In other words: there is absolutely no sense of immersion. And never mind the worst opening of a game in gaming history. I seriously got a headache and had to stop looking at the tv - in general the fuzzy, digital trippy stuff was hard to deal with. The story isn't worth talking about but worse, there is no real gameplay (as far as I'm concerned). You may push a button here or there, but I honestly made it through most of the tutorials without much looking at the screen and just mashing whatever button they asked me to. You can climb even the hardest of walls/buildings with little effort. There are quests where you just have to climb up the same type of tower over and over. It wasn't fun the first time but you have to do it a dozen times over. At least you don't have to climb back down - you jump into a bail of hay. Wow, games have come a long way, eh? Combat wasn't any more fun. The fact its a stealth game simply drags any action on longer than need be. The assassinations were irritating and guess what: that's the game. I decided I'd try skipping the assassinations and the climbing quests since it wasn't any fun - well, there's little else to do in the game. That's it. And now for The Worst Idea in a Game. Ever: The "gentle push" button. Yes, there's a button used just to gently push people out of the way. Yeah, its as exciting as it sounds. If the "gentle pushing" gets too heart-pounding of an experience there's always the "blend" button that has your character hold his head down. That's almost as exciting as gently pushing people out of the way and several steps more exciting than say, reorganizing your sock drawer or filing your fingernails. I found holding the green xbox button for several seconds ended up being more desirable. The "shut-down console" option solves many of AC's problems. Also get used to looooooooooong scenes where the character you're puppeteering just stands there in clouds, doing nothing. Seriously. Just wait and something trippy will happen until the next dream/memory/whatever loads. I can't imagine what the developers of this game were thinking. I'd be wary to ever get another Ubisoft game - maybe its just the Montreal group. I put it up for sale the day after I bought it. Other than the graphics I can't say a single good thing about it. Want a stealth game? This isn't the one. So 1 star seems generous but its the lowest you can choose.

Let me preface this by saying that I have not read any of the other reviews for this game here on Amazon, so I have no idea what everyone else is considering the pros/cons. This is just my observations from playing the game that, I am sorry to say, I paid full retail price for. It should also be noted that I did not finish the game. Let's start with the good: Graphics: The graphics in this game are simply amazing. By far the best I have seen in a console game, ever. Even without playing it on an HD television, I thought that the designers did an amazing job with the scenery. Just climb to to the top of any of the look-out points in one of the cities and you'll see what I mean. Simply amazing. Controls: The controls were very intuitive, not requiring any adjustmant time to get used to at all. That was a high point, as many games now require you to play with the controls a little bit before getting right to the action. There was none of that with this game. Now on to the bad. Let me just say that I feel many of these items to be subjective, and I'm sure many other people could dismiss some of these and enjoy the game. I could not. Story/Gameplay: The story itself was decent. Without giving anything away, I thought that it was an interesting premise to be looking at these events through the eyes of an ancestor. However, the part of the story that really irritated me, and more or less ruined the game for me, was how repetitive that the game got. It amounts to: 1. Travel to city 2. Report to local bureau chief 3. Perform several "Investigation" tasks 4. Go back to bureau chief 5. Locate and assassinate target. Seriously, I am supposed to do this eight times? No thanks, it stopped being interesting after the second time that I had to do it. Realism: Try walking into your local shopping center with a couple of swords hanging from your belt, and several knives strapped to your back in plain view. You'd be lucky to walk out of there alive after the local police got called out. But this is exactly what you do in this game. And even worse, the guards don't care! Seriously now, how could someone like that possibly hope to blend into a crowd in a major city. Or, how could they possibly blend in with a bunch of monks as they walk around the city? This is not such a major issue for many people, I'm sure. I just couldn't get past this as I was playing. I mean, you stab someone in the alley, and then all you have to do is walk away slowly with your weapon sheathed and the guards don't think to stop you? Come on! Finally, you can walk around every guard in the game with all these weapons hanging from your character, but take one step towards a Templar, and they attack you. I thought you were supposed to be able to blend in with the crowds? What happened to being able to effortlessly blending in? This was a major inconsistancy that really irritated me after a while. In closing, I would save your money. If you absolutely must play this game, rent it. You won't get a major case of buyers remorse that way. Oh, and parents, it's rated M for a reason. Younger kids should defintely not be playing a game where the object is to knife someone in a public place without anyone knowing what just happened. Try looking at something else.
Pretty but dull. November 17, 2007 S. Herd (Ladera Ranch, CA USA) 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
You want to love this game, but you can't. On the surface it looks fantastic but there is no endearing qualities below the surface. Look at the game from a summer blockbuster movie perspective and you may enjoy it a little more, very pretty but no substance. Relish your first assassination, because after that the game is the same for the other eight kills. If the game was not touted to the customer as next gen, I would be okay with it. This game would not look out of place on the Xbox: however, I expect more from a Xbox 360 game. Look at BioShock it is amazing! Buyer beware. Rent It.. December 10, 2007 marc (New Haven, Connecticut) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
this game is graphically Excellent and i love scaling along buildings and leaping from various objects...but after about 5 hours, this game gets EXTREMELY repetative...mainly because you cant just locate your target and kill him...you have to do a bunch of pointless things FIRST. youv got to scale about 3 buildings and reach the highest building...then locate an informant who knows who you must kill..but they run you in circles and have you play USELESS Pick Pocket and Interogation side quests...THEN there are street informants who have you kill more people...and a bunch of other run-around, and thats on EVERY mission. half the time, i didnt even kno where to go, it was so unclear... if they would have just let you know from the JUMP who you had to kill...and let you LOCATE that individual on your own without all the useless side missions (like everyone thought this game would be), i would have a higher tolerance for this game. but its definately worth the RENTAL..or find it used at Gamestop and return it within 7 days for a full refund. if your into games that take place around this Time frame, i highly suggest Fable for xbox. i picked that game up when i took this back and i love it. iLL .
