3 out of 5 stars No BS, just the truth   March 20, 2008

This game is fun, but as you're playing it, you'll realize it's a lot like the first Vegas. You'll have a feeing of "been there, done that" except that the first Vegas was intense.

There's new improvements in RSV2, like a run button and the actual number of grenades and explosives your teammates are carrying.

The only real problems with RSV2 are ugly environments, AI sometimes acting strange, and lag. Sometimes the game gets so laggy that it's literally choppy, especially when smoke is on screen.

Rent before you buy it. It's a good game, but it won't surprise you or feel like a must-have.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Sequel   March 18, 2008

A great sequel to a great game, exactly what I wanted, co-op is perfect, its cool that your friends can join in progress. If you are a fan of swat based shooters and want something different then call of duty 4, then you have to pick this game up!!

3 out of 5 stars Perhaps I was expecting too much...   March 20, 2008

After playing this game for the past 5 hours, I must say that overall I am less than pleased. In my opinion, this would be better off as a $29.99 expansion pack to Vegas 1. There is not much new here to truly consider this a stand-alone sequel. Too much of it feels "carried over" from Vegas 1. Even some of the online terrorist elimination maps are identical. I do like the new leveling system, but that's about the biggest new feature on this game worth mentioning. If you loved Vegas 1, then you will obviously love this game, as it feels like a continuation of the original. As I stated in my title, I guess I was expecting more new features that would make this stand apart from the original.

3 out of 5 stars Unimpressed with the NEW R6   March 22, 2008

First the good
-The game has some cool new weapons and armor.
-Cool new features like getting points for your character in single player story mode.
-Sprinting has saved me a couple times..
-It is a fun game to play in single player story mode, its a bit harder than the first and you need a more tactical approach to the levels in this one.

Now the not so good
-Mainly the graphics! They REALLY disappointed me. They are sub-par for a game thats been in production for 2 years and it looks like not much has changed since the first one. The environments look blocky and unrefined! I was really bummed about this!!
-There are a few irritating bugs, like frame-rate drops for no apparent reason and some team AI quirks.
-The checkpoints in SP are horrible.
-Online play isn't comparable to other shooters, mainly COD4. Severe lag, short matches and is a nightmare to even get into an online match, for me at least.

My advise is if you're reading these reviews wait until the price drops or when you can pick it up used. In my opinion its not worth full price right now unless you're a fan of the series.

2 out of 5 stars SUB-PAR for the course   March 23, 2008

First off, a little background info so you know where i am coming from...

I AM:

1. an average joe
2. a casual xbox live gamer who spends less than 10-12 hours a week playing games.
3. a HUGE fan of the Rainbow Six series for the past 10 years and have played them all.

STORY MODE REVIEW

Pro: graphics have improved from the first one. not an incredible difference but noticeable.

Con: framerate is still low (I'm guessing like 30fps) and when you pan to the side to aim quickly it can become a hindrance.

Con: framerate drops during some parts of the game.

Pro: there are less menus to sift through.

Pro: you can create your own protagonist and play him/her offline and online in both story/t-hunt and multiplayer.

The PEC is integrated into the front page as it is the central base station of the vegas experience.

Pro: you get a xp bonus if you are a returning Elite which puts you at specialist rank with a few unlocks like flight helmet and ballistic mask.

Con: I did not get the achievement for skipping Private First Class rank.

Pro: the first level is cool, set in a snowy mountain setting. Why couldnt they have this kind of environment for a multiplayer map?

Pro: I'm liking the location settings much better in this version than vegas 1.

Pro: although still a "linear story scripting" experience, you are provided with multiple entry points, and a few options of how to take down a room. at least more so than vegas 1, and even more so than Black Arrow.

Con: the girl in the chopper has to spell it out for you though. You dont really need to think for yourself. She basically tells you all the options rather than having you figure it out with your team.

Example, there is one level you are in the rec center which is quite large. You need to go from area to area and clear each section. But you have a couple ways to do this. There is one part that you can go up to the roof and snipe through the skylight and have your team clear the bottom floors. Or you can enter from the 2nd floor, or the first floor. There are at least 4-5 different ways to take this section down. But the helicopter lady basically tells you outright what you should do.

Pro: they removed the on-screen radar in story mode and replaced it with "temporary thermal scan".

The way it works is you can trigger it when it comes online and it will scan the room for a few seconds, giving thermal signatures on the mini radar map. When it is all used up you have to wait some time before it comes online again.

Con: I actually find the thermal scan kind of a useless feature and i almost never use it.

Con: Incompetent teammates return with their running out in the open, getting shot and getting you killed trying to medic them all over again. Not much improvement in the player AI despite what Ubi claims. 80% of the time I leave them behind.

Con: enemy AI still has some problems such as standing out in the open while getting shot at, or sometimes they run towards you and stop right in front of you (if you dont shoot them) and just fire like a zombie rather than return fire defensively. I have yet to see enemies cover their movement as they advance to your position like advertised.

Pro: weapon attachment settings are saved and "remembered" each time you play.

Pro: in the first 3 chapters of the game so far, ive gotten healthy use out of my SR25SD rifle as enemies seem to spawn further out. Combined with large scale and open locales, makes for pretty good long range shooting.

TERRORIST HUNT REVIEW

Pro: its still fun to play for the most part with 4 friends messing around.

Con: same old same old... enemies still spawn out of thin air in front or behind you.

Con: really cheap AI that actually use the cover glitch against you.

Con: enemy Ai has not improved, as they still get stuck behind objects, run up to your face spraying P90 or magic Spas12 rather than cover their movements.

Con: still has a glitch where you "cant find last terrorist".

MULTIPLAYER ADVERSARIAL REVIEW

Pro: Team Leader mode is a good addition.

Con: They shouldnt have sacrificed VIP in its stead.

Con: I'm having serious connecivity issues that many others are experiencing. I can't host games most of the time because sometimes no one can see or join my server. Also can't join any one else's server even when invited. This alone would be a deal-breaker for me.

Con: framerate drops even in MP (different from internet lag). The graphics slow down to a crawl (mostly happens when too many grenades explode).

Con: freezing and lockups. I have experienced quite a bit of game freezing.

Con: dubious amount of bugs and glitches. Most of the Vegas 1 glitches have returned unfixed.

Pro: multiplayer graphics are much better than they were in vegas 1. Now the MP and SP graphics are are a little more similar.

Con: lag and host advantage are still issues to the same degree as vegas 1 maybe even worse.

Pro: shooting through objects is a MUCH welcome addition to this game.

Con: COVER GLITCH 100% intact. In case you do not know what the cover glitch is, it is when someone takes cover behind an object that conceals his entire body from his enemy and he is able to freely shoot through the cover without ever exposing his body. Even with bullet penetration, you still cannot shoot back at a cover glitcher when he is behind "safe cover".

Con: shouldering aka perspective glitch aka cornering glitch still 100% intact. Shouldering is when a player is shooting very close the the corner of a wall and only a fraction of his body is visible to his opponent, usually just an elbow. Different from Cover Glitch in that this is done in first person not while in cover mode.

Pro: aiming penalty when popping out of cover is a welcome addition.

Con: "dotting screen" or "vision menu cheating" is still effective despite the penalty.

Con: radar toggle is individual option, not host option. Makes NO SENSE whatsoever.

Con: still lacks BASIC server toggles for many aspects of the game.

Pro: they kept the running speed of players slow, and even with the addition of sprint, this game is not hyper paced like many other shooters.

Pro: custom faces load quicker

BOTTOM LINE:

The graphics fall below par for the course as COD4 really set the standards quite high. This game lacks originality. All the gameplay elements are not new innovations. They are gameplay elements taken from existing games and implemented into this one. There is nothing innovative about this game. The best thing Vegas 2 has going for it is the ability to create a custom character with custom face and play it both online and off. I personally do not care for ACES or ranking up, or unlocking weapons, so none of those "features" impress me.

The story mode is short and lacks depth. This game has absolutely no replayability since the story mode is so linear (there is only one way to play it) and the online is non-functional and bug-ridden.

This game is not realistic IN ANY WAY. If you are a fan of the older Rainbow games, you already know this game wont offer anything for you as it is nothing like the first 3 titles (in a bad way). But then again many returning Vegas fans are very disappointed with this title as well.

This game has serious issues that need to be addressed, mostly crippled in the online multiplayer department. It is virtually unplayable. It is apparent to me that this game was rushed out the door with minimal testing. I feel this is not worth the $60 price tag and I honestly regret buying it. I will be getting rid of my game and going back to COD4.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
