Third Time IS the Charm July 30, 2007 Mike Jensen (Oklahoma, USA) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
I have purchased each release upgrade in this game series and, in my opinion, EU III is by far the best in the series. Unlike other reviewers I really like the new look of the game and the ease and access to more information you get from the other views of the map - terrain, political, religious, etc. - really an enhancement. As to the divergence from historical events, I rather like the play of this edition better than the slavish approach of EU II to history which caused things to happen that, in the context of the game being played, made no sense at all. The big plus to me is that I have not encountered any bugs in EU III after many hours of play. EU II was very buggy, even after downloading patches. III has been solid. Another thing I really enjoy is that the economic logic really makes sense - you don't have to experience hyper-inflation as was inevitable in II. The national development options also make better sense. I enjoy the military improvements - vastly superior to previous releases; the whole game is just better in every way. I absolutely love these games and am deeply addicted to playing them at virtually every opportunity. If you enjoy thinking about what you're doing and really planning things and then watching your vision take shape, this game is a winner hands down!!
Excellent game on par with Paradox April 23, 2007 M. Haiss 13 out of 15 found this review helpful
You need a somewhat modern system with a video card that supports Pixel Shader 2.0 to play this game. If you don't you will be disappointed. The game itself is incredible and blows away it's predecessor EU2. The new 3d graphics are nice and the interface is quite easy to grasp. Of course this being a Paradox game there are bugs, but with their user feedback forum and participation of the dev staff in said forum, patches have been released fixing many of the issues. If you liked EU2, Victoria, or HOI...you will LOVE this game
'What Ifs' abound February 25, 2007 PatrickJS (Los Angeles, CA) 9 out of 27 found this review helpful
The old saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Obviously computer game producers have never heard of this. Hot on the heels of the anti-climactical, heavily flawed Caesar IV comes EU3. The first two EUs, like the first three Caesars, were fun, addictive, light hearted and light on your computer. Then someone thinks a complete overhaul is necessary, and we get a product that not only is excessivly baroque in its design and execution but swallows computer memory like an SUV swallows gasoline. Almost immediately after the release of EU3 comes the patch (an "as is" patch, as claimed by the Mods at the offical forum) - NEVER a good sign. Apparently this is to allay an extreme flaw in the game processor - the game won't load on many computers, mine for one, even though the computer may meet or exceed the needed requirements, because it doesn't recognize the computer as having the necessary amount of memory - only 128MB of video memory. I say "only" because few quality games nowadays eat less. What about the game needed to be changed? Nothing, in this reviewer's opinion. Not only is the game fundamentally flawed technicall but visually it is ugly. The lovely map of the world in the first two EUs have been replaced with gaudily colored, faux "old time"-looking in the "style" of pre-18th century maps. Not necessary. I won't continue much further into aspects of the game itself because, in this reviewer's opinion, if they can't get the game to even load right in the beginning, what's more to discuss? It wasn't broke. Why'd they try to fix it?
Just wait on buying this game April 9, 2007 Eduardo Soto (chicago, il) 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
This game is a slightly improved version of EU2. However the best part of EU2 was the user created mod packs (such as EEP and AGC which could be downloaded at the paradox forums). As these mod packs take quite a few months to take shape and EU3 is still pretty new, I would suggest any prospective buyer to wait until a year or so after the initial release to really be able to enjoy this game fully. Otherwise as the game stands it is only good for 2 or 3 lost weekends.
Very buggy April 8, 2007 Steve McBride (Seattle, WA) 6 out of 26 found this review helpful
Horrible game, even after the patch. I had it crash 8 times in the first 24 hours and just gave up on it.
