great idea August 20, 2002 18 out of 21 found this review helpful
I'm glad that microsoft made memory cards available to the xbox. the hard drive is of course big enough for many years of play, but you can't switch information from hard drive to hard drive. I believe that's the reason why microsoft made memory cards available. I only bought a memory card so I could play my saved games at a friends house. Also, if you run out room on the hard drive, just delete all of the files you rarely or never use.(with 10 gigs of space, that usually means 3/4 of your files) I disagree with one of you who said the hard drive might go haywire, YEAH RIGHT! listen, all computers have a form of hardrive, and they rarely fail! and it usually happens to viruses.it's more likely that somehing will happen to the memory card. it can get stepped on, dropped, or you can accidentally spill coke on it. I'll garuntee that'll stop it from working. My bottom line is, just buy this memory card if you like to swap files with your buddies. and for that reason only!

I think the memory unit is a good purchase because of the potential and versatility of the unit. The memory unit can be used for so many things. If you save a game that you have used a cheat code. Save the game on the memory unit and take it over a friend's house. Do you see were I'm going with this? You can have the advantage of a cheat code over your buddies. That is, if you can get your friend to play without his or her own cheat codes. Also, if you have a friend that can't get past a certain point, or if you can't get past a certain point on a game, you can help them out by downloading your game to their XBOX. The huge memory the onboard hard drive has is hard to use up. But if for some strange reason you find yourself without any memory left on you onboard hard drive, the memory unit can act as an unlimited amount of storage space; like a JAZZ drive on a computer, adding to the versatility of the XBOX system. You can also download music files to the memory unit and use them as sound tracks during game play. You can't complain anymore about not having good sound tracks on games. Now, you make your own tracks. And you don't have use precious space on your hard drive. Adding still more versatility to the XBOX. Lets see if PS2 can do that. Price is the only issue I have with the memory unit. (...) I think, a bit much for this accessory. It's almost as much as a video game. If the price were (less), it would be more attractive to most people. Mad Cats has a version that's (less).
One overlooked reason for its usefulness... February 26, 2005 John Norris (B'ham, AL) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
Aside from the obvious reasons why an Xbox Memory Unit is useful, there is another reason. I have two Memory Units because Xbox games, mainly sports games like NFL Street 2 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005, only allow you to save a limited amount of user profiles. For example, If you want to create more than four golfers on Tiger Woods 2005, Then you'll need one. That game only allows you to save up to four golfers(user profiles) to a memory system. On NFL Street 2, you can only save up to sixteen user profiles(created teams) to a memory system. Plus, the user profiles tend not to take up a lot of space either. So, that is another reason why Xbox Memory Units are useful.

As others have posted, the Xbox has an 8 GB (earlier ones are rumored to have 10 GB) hard drives. Memory cards help only in the following cases: 1) Transfering files to other Xboxes, like a friend's 2) Copying your Xbox Live account to the card so you can bring your account to your friend's house. (great feature)Otherwise, it is simply a memory card.
A REAL reason to buy this... February 1, 2002 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
There is a more compeling reason to buy a memory card...when your xbox breaks down. Because all of your achived levels and player stats are stored on the internal hard drive, if you ever need to send in your xbox for repair, there is a significant chance that they will wipe the hard disk clean and/or update the OS, or replace it with a new hard disk if that was the cause of the failure. This would result in *ALL* of your game data being lost and you would then need to re-play *all* of your games for dozens of hours just to get to where you were before the xbox broke. So, I'm getting this memory card and doing "backups" every so often so if the xbox ever breaks, I won't loose my game data.
