New to Video Games? Let me help... September 16, 2004 Victor R. Perry (New Mexico, USA) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
Okay, I'm a complete beginner to video games and Xbox was my first system. When my grandma offered to get us one, Xbox looked the best for us. I'll run through some of the "complaints" people have: -PS2 and GameCube have more games! That's probably very true. But when you buy a system, it's not how many games you have, but what KIND of games you like to play. (For example: I like big, giant adventure games. You're gonna need a bit of memory for those!) Besides, Xbox has nearly 500 Games, and more are made all the time. -The Xbox is too big. I can't take it with me on trips. Come on. I'm 14 and I've carried bigger things than this on my lap. And you can always put it in the trunk. I would not take it on the plane, but then I wouldn't take any other video game system in a plane. Too risky. The fact that it's bigger doesn't spoil anything. Just don't drop it! Any electronic device (computer, other consoles, etc,) would break. -The Controllers are too big. I'm a beginner to video games and this controller S fit my hands perfectly. This console comes with Controller S, and my little 4-Year brother could hold it and play games. I don't know what the "D" controllers are like. Now I'll go through the features: +Controllers: As I said before, this controller S totally agrees with me. The best thing about this controller is the "inline release". About mid-way through the cord there's a spot where the cord will pull apart, instead of yanking on the console. This comes in real handy because we're always tripping over the cord. +Graphics: Everyone says Xbox has the best graphics, so I'll just have to take their word for it. The games we've played have AWESOME graphics. I mean really, really, realistic graphics. +Memory: Oh man, this thing has so Much SPACE! How much space? Well, it has 50,000 "Blocks" for memory, and our games normally take up about 20-100 "Blocks". And you can always go back and delete saved games if it takes up too much space. If you're driven off PC Games because your computer can't handle it any longer, then this could be the system for you! And you have to buy extra memory for the other systems. Who wants to do that? +Games: I've only played a few games, but Xbox has some very sweet-looking games! We've got Voodoo Vince, the most original game I've ever seen, and only on Xbox! There's tons of great-looking games out there, and I've only tapped (err, played) them! Someone complained that it's mostly Mature titles on the Xbox. Well, the most popular games (Halo, etc.) are often the popular ones. But there's still plenty of other games without Mature ratings. +Four Controller Ports: I'm the oldest of four kids. Naturally, we fight, fight, and fight. Especially over the computer. So these extra controller ports (along with a bunch of four-player games) look mighty fine...wouldn't you say? +System Link/Xbox Live: I haven't tried either, but it's a cool idea. System Link is where you hook up one Xbox to another, so that 8 people (4 to each Xbox) can play the same game. You just need one TV for every Xbox and a game that's compatible. Xbox Live looks very, very cool. That's pretty much all I can say. You should talk to someone who has tried it! +DVD & Music: I don't care much about this feature, because we had a DVD Player before getting an Xbox. Still, the Remote is expensive, but hey! It's cheaper than getting a DVD Player. As for Music, I haven't got the "Xbox Music Mixer", but we have played CD's in it, which is a breeze! They sound great! +Cables, Wires, etc. If you have an older TV (which we do), then you'll need to get a RF Adapter. If your TV has those Audio/Video outlets (the red, white and yellow plugs) then (I think) you got nothing to worry about. Closing Comments: Being new to Video Games, the Xbox blew me away. Great games. Awesome graphics. Tons ands tons of memory...yep. This thing totally rocks. Still, I can understand why PS2 fans hate the Xbox: Microsoft. That company is so dominant it's incredible. I haven't tried their "Customer Support", mostly because I don't need to. But still, Microsoft does stink (my dad owns a Windows XP). (...)
Great games, horrible hardware. September 25, 2004 Andres G. (Paterson, NJ) 10 out of 13 found this review helpful
I bought my XBOX in January of 2003, and two years after I bought it, my dvd drive was not working properly and I had to replace it. I love XBOX, I love it's games, but I do believe that the people who are in charge made a terrible mistake by using three different contractors to make the dvd drive for the XBOX. Before you buy an XBOX, beware of the faulty DVD drives. You can get one out of three, you can either get the Thompson DVD drive, which is the worst one and is not compatible with any format other than DVD-rom and CD-rom. The Phillips DVD drive, which is not as bad as the Thompson, but not the best. This drive is compatible with CD-R, DVD, and Cd-RW. And last we have the Samsung DVD drive. This is by far the best one you can get. It is compatible with CD-R, CD-RW DVD, and DVD+R, and most important of all, if you buy a brand new XBOX, all three cost the same, but if you buy it separately, the Samsung can cost you $100 or more. Unfortunately, the only way to identify these different drives is to see their disc tray. The Thompson's tray is narrow in the middle. The phillips's tray is a little wider in the middle than the Thompson, and the Samsung, has two holes on the corners of the tray. My advice to anyone who is planing on buying an xbox. Buy it, open it, and if it is a Thompson, return it right away, otherwise you will have to buy a new one within a year. If it is a Phillips, It's up to you, but always try to go for the Samsung, it is the best, and it is worth the search.
Microsoft takes a large leap forward with the xbox console September 28, 2004 10 out of 16 found this review helpful
Some people say that the Xbox console is based for age groups 15-20...but i am only 11 and I'm having more fun with it than anyone would've dreamed of. Basicly the Xbox is almost perfect in every way, gameplay: every game I've ever played on Xbox is perfect and as you probobaly allready know, Xbox has Halo... the ultimate gaming expirience...Halo is a must get game with up to 4 players and nonstop fun! Graphics: the only way I can tell you about the graphics is by saying that if they got any better then it would look like you were looking at real life movement. Memory: the memory on the Xbox is litteraly unbelivible, there is 500,00 MB on the xbox and I havent used up one MB even though I've downloaded two games and two music CD's! An added xtra isthat you can download music onto the hard drive of the xbox and therefore you can the play the music without needing the disk. Overall I recomend this more than PS2 or gamecube becaus the gameplay is much better and it dos'nt take long at all to loadsaved games.
Easy to use, and a whole lot of fun for kids and adults October 17, 2004 jean luc (London - for now) 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Having recently purchased this for my nephew, I was very surprised how easy it was to get set up. Generally anything new these days requires my 12 year old nephew to hook it up for me. I don't know if he was more impressed with my gift or my new-found techincal capabilities. The images and graphics are first-rate, the controls make sense and are easy to get used to. Granted we have two games, and they are both driving so I can't speak to the run/jump/shoot controls, but if they work as well as the rest of this set then I assume they too are excellent. A great toy for kids and adults.
The truth January 8, 2005 10 out of 22 found this review helpful
I own all three of this generation console which is the Xbox, PS2 and the Gamecube and this is just the way it is. Xbox The Xbox does have the best graphics of the three systems. It also has the smallest choice of good games, theres Halo 1 and 2, Ninja Gaiden, Fable and thats it. Those are the only really remarkable exsclusives for the Xbox. The design for the Xbox is very big clunky and ugly. The Xbox has the worst designed controller of the systems. The load times aren't bad. Xbox live also cost to much. Overall I would not recommend this game system to anyone PS2 There is no doubt that the PS2 not only has the most games for it, but it also has the largest amount of great exsclusives such as GTA 3, Vice, San Andreas, Jak 1, Jak 2, Jak 3, Ratchet 1, Ratchet 2, Ratchet 3, Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, Final Fantisy, Tekken, Killzone, Silent Hill 2 and 3 and 4 and all of the resident evil, and Socom. The PS2 does have some truly amazing graphics on some games and the New design is very slik and cool making it have the best looking design out of the 3. Online is Great with great games to play. Load times arent bad but not great. This would be the best choice and it on the award for most popular game system. Statics show that the PS2 sold more in one day than the Xbox and Gamecube sold in one week on the holiday season. If you are a true gamer then I would suggest picking up the PS2 before the box or the cube. Gamecube Gamecube has the most impressive load times of and system ever created. It also has some of the biggest and well known titles in the history in video games. This include Mario, The legend of Zelda, and Metriod. The cube also has Resident Evil 4 coming January 11 which will give you something very big to look forward to. Some other great game are Donkey Konga and the upcoming Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. The biggest game thats coming though is the new realistic mature Zelda game coming sometime 2005. The design for the Game cube is good and same goes for the controller. However, some people say that the Gamecube is more for the younger audience but I disagree. I does have the largest amount of games for kids but that doesn't mean its a kids only system, It has plents of mature games out and plenty more to come. One really great thing about the Gamecube is the price, it's the cheapest of the three console at only 99 bucks. If you can't aford the PS2 then this is the next best thing. I hope this was helpful to anyone shopping for a system. Also, dont think that your system is the best just because that is the one you own, just because you own just a xbox or you own just a gamecube doesn't make it the best system. Own all three before you judge which is the best and don't say ps2 sucks just because you don't have one. If you know nothing about the system then don't say nothing about it.
