worth the money December 2, 2002 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Ok, kids, system loyalty or Microsoft hatred aside, this is a quality product. Yes, we all would have liked to have been able to watch DVD's without buying a remote. Nobody likes spending more money after shelling out the price of an Xbox. However, what some of you are'nt taking into account is that the Xbox is saving you money over the PS2 in other areas. Example: an included hard drive and ethernet port. Buying these things for a PS2 sure as heck is going to cost more than a remote for the Xbox. Last time a checked, PS2 memory cards cost as much as the Playback Kit, and guess what? You HAVE to buy a memory card with your PS2 if you wanna save anything. And as for the picture quality, it is MUCH better than the PS2 (and yes, I do have both, so I know what I'm talking about). If you don't already have a decent DVD player, just spend the money for this kit. If you're using a PS2 or a cheap player, this is definitely worth the cost.
XBox DVD Kit Is Cool- But don't use The Remote November 30, 2001 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
What is there to say about the XBox DVD kit? It works. It actually works as well as a ($) abaove average DVD player, so consider the kit a bargain. You're paying ($) plus ($) for a gaming console (worth at least $) and a better-than-decent DVD player (at least another $). The only gripe I have with it is not the XBox, but with the remote control itslef. It lacks a few standard features and just adds another control to my over crowded collection (TV, VCR, Stero, Cable Box). But here's a great solution. Just plug in RCA DVD Player codes into a universal remote, and *poof* just like that it operates the XBox. Try it.
Nice upgrade January 2, 2003 Richard C. Hastings (Lincoln University, PA United States) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I convinced my wife that we should get the Xbox because it can be used as a DVD player. I, of course, did not tell her that we would have to pay approximately [$] extra for the DVD movie player functionality.Microsoft loses money on every Xbox sold. Their business model is to make their money back on their licensing fees from the games and the Xbox live service. That is why it cost extra for the DVD movie player kit. The price of the kit includes the licensing fee to the consortium that controls the DVD patent and the price of the hardware (remote and receiver). The DVD player feature is quite nice. It plays smoothly and all the function buttons work well. The only reason I don't give the kit 5 stars is some DVD movies will not play in it but will play on the DVD player on my Mac Powerbook. The movie disc must be perfectly clean for it to play in the Xbox.
Clarification on Xbox Dvd Kit September 9, 2004 rock (new delhi, india) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
Purchase the xbox console and dvd movie playback kit that matches the region in which you are located. After you buy the dvd kit and put the dvd infrared sensor into your xbox, the dvd kit permanently codes your xbox based on the region that your kit is from(the region code of the dvd kit is only written on the outside packaging of the kit). From that point forward, you can only play dvd's from the region that the xbox dvd kit is from and, ofcourse, dvd's carrying the label 'all regions'.You cannot play dvd's from another region even if you later on try using a dvd kit from that other region on your xbox. For instance,if you are in the US and have a region 1 dvd kit and you import a dvd from abroad, say, having region code 3,it will not play on your xbox console. But here's how you can change the dvd region on your xbox to play it.1-Send your xbox console for a repair to have it re-adjusted to play dvd's from the desired region. You will have to pay for a repair here even if your xbox is still in warranty period.2-Next,buy a dvd kit sold for the desired region to use after your xbox console is repaired. From here on in,you can only play dvd's from this region and ,ofcourse, dvd's carrying the label 'all regions'.It is is a permanent change. Thus your xbox console acts like a 'region specific' dvd player rather than a 'region free' dvd player. But all said, i have no problems with the dvd kit.I have a sony dvd player but i find the picture clarity better on xbox. (all the above info was procured from xbox customer care department. To this end,i hold that it is correct )
Does not play all DVDs, easy setup + controll December 27, 2001 Geoffrey Johnson (Lake Villa, IL United States) 10 out of 16 found this review helpful
How this works is there is a little adapter, which plugs into any of the controller ports like an X-Box controller, then put two AAA batteries into the remote. Beware, because remember the X-Box is more like a computer and less like a DVD player. Why do you need to know that? DVD players can play any DVD, but computers only play DVDs with the country code of "1." 1 is the country code for the DVD, which means that it was made for North American DVD players. So look at the back of your DVD cases down near the bottom where it says Dolby Digital look for a giant "1." That means the X-Box can play it. Pretty much all DVDs come with the "1," but some popular DVDs like Gladiator and the Simpson's Boxed set do not have the "1."
