Good for what it is, but not progressive - enabled June 19, 2002 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Xbox will NOT play DVD video discs in progressive mode. An earlier review on this page claims that it does. If you want a DVD player that will display movies in progressive mode, be aware that Xbox won't. It will display MPEG-2 cutscenes (from games) in progressive, and technically has the hardware capability to output DVD video in progressive mode, but because of Macrovision issues, Microsoft disabled this feature. Other than that, I would have liked an on/off button on the remote control. With a power button, I would have given it 5 stars. And I kind of wish the buttons on the remote would allow fast-forwarding of CD and hard drive music -- you can skip forward and backward, but as far as I can tell, you can't fast-forward a song on Xbox. I already own a DVD player, but at the risk of never using it again, it's nice to have one less system and one less set of cables to worry about.
Tap into your Xbox's great DVD-playing potential! July 2, 2002 Liquid Rhino (Miami, FL USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This is an item I've read lots of mixed reviews about, but after taking the plunge, I'm surprised that I've had my Xbox this long without this little piece of hardware. While it is true and a legitimate concern that Microsoft chose not to include Power or Eject funtions on the remote (hence the 4 out of 5 rating), the remote is extremely easy to use and well-contoured to your hands. The buttons are of good quality with excellent spring and good general layout. The on-screen menus and display text are sharp and clear, and include top-of-the-line DVD player features like A-B repeat, Zoom, and a killer Advance/Rewind feature of many speeds from 2x-32x. Plus, it also works as a CD and Soundtrack Feature remote if you plan on using you Xbox to play music! Totally worth the money! :)

Can't get a DVD playback November 26, 2001 7 out of 17 found this review helpful
Would be nice to get one of these so that I can use the XBox as a DVD player too, but unfortunately getting one is not as easy as it is to get an XBox. For those of you that are selling your used controllers for ...+ a big middle finger to you. That is just greedy. Good luck to the rest of us that would rather pay what its worth ....
Aimed at those without a dedicated DVD player January 6, 2002 Rage Reset (Sydney, Australia) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
This device is worth the purchase price if you do not have a DVD player. As explained already, you are mostly playing licensing fees, as well as a few dollars for the manufacture of the infrared unit and remote. Interestingly, the infrared unit is basically a "dongle", meaning that all it does is tell the Xbox it's "OK" to play movies - the Xbox is basically capable of doing this already (unlike the PS2, which has to be taught via a CD which comes with the remote package) and the DVD playback kit simply enables the feature. It IS annoying that there is no open/close or power button on the remote, nor is there a "zoom" button. Still, this small shortcoming aside, it's a very capable unit. Also, it features glow-in-the-dark buttons - a feature which is lacking on the PS2 remote. I put off purchasing a DVD player due to the fact that I would be buying an Xbox. I'm not the least disappointed that I did so and I find that this is a more than acceptable alternative to the many dedicated DVD players I have used in the past.
