Micro$haft at it again... April 22, 2002 7 out of 34 found this review helpful
Like the others have said, the XBOX should have either come with the remote or just let a game controller control the basic features of dvd playback. But, this is Micro$haft we're talking about. And when Sony's PS2 played dvd's right out of the box - M$ was pi$$ed because they knew that they wanted more $$ from the xbox (the 300+any addon's they can think of - hence the a/v kit, the dvd kit, etc, etc, etc)
Almost perfect... October 20, 2002 dfkap (Sacramento, CA United States) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
It's simple: If you have an Xbox, you might as well get the DVD playback kit.PROS: 1. The Xbox is cooler than my JVC DVD players. 2. The Xbox takes up less room than my JVC AND Xbox together. 3. The kit works with my RCA controller, so I'm happy. 4. Really clean picture 5. The xbox is semi-portable, so you can watch dvd's at friends' houses. CONS: 1. This whole thing is a feature that should really have been included with the Xbox. 2. No eject or power buttons (which drives me freaking nuts). Bottom line: Buy it for Pete's sake! There's even a mail in rebate from time to time that makes the thing free (if you buy an xbox between certain dates). Oh, yeah... you might just want to use the plug in part and program your TV's universal remote, using RCA's codes.
The XBOX makes a terrible DVD Player October 23, 2003 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
I bought the DVD playback kit (really just a remote and IR receiver) plus the XBOX high def kit to hopefully use the XBOX as a combo game system and DVD/CD player. Boy was I wrong about that. Here are some of the problems:- DVD's frequently don't read. The XBOX will tell me there's something wrong with the disc, but in fact it's usually a brand new disc, that plays fine in my other players. - DVD's that are multilayer (or sometimes regular DVD's) will periodically lock up in the middle of a movie. Very frustrating. (those movies play fine, even on my 3 year old clunker DVD player). - The XBOX won't play CD-R's (or CD-RW's) at all. It flat out won't read any CD's that you burn yourself. - Despite the fact that the output is component video, and the XBOX hardware is actually capable of HD output, the DVD playback isn't even progressive scan. It's plain old 480i (interlaced) video. However, the XBOX games NEVER lock up or misread, and for that I'm grateful. I bought a relatively inexpensive Sony DVD player for a little over a hundred bucks that has 3:2 reverse pull-down, 480p output, etc., and it doesn't lock up! So now the XBOX is just for games. Need I say more? Don't buy this DVD playback kit!
Where is the eject button? November 24, 2001 Kyle Smith (Lacey, Washington United States) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
This works fine, the X box plays DVD without a problem and the sound and picture are what they would be on any other player. The only thing I want to ask bill is where is the eject button on the controller, sure I have to get up to take the disk out anyway but how hard would it have been to stick one on there anyway, maybe a power button too. Otherwise get it and enjoy the world of DVD. Supports DTS too.
Works like a charm/ Use your universal remote. March 22, 2002 D. Baker (Atlanta, GA) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
When I plugged the infrared receiver plug into the controller port on my XBOX, I thought, "well shoot, any old remote should be able to work with that!" So I called microsoft's terrific tech support and the guy told me under the table that if you enter in the code into your universal remote as you would for an RCA DVD player then it should operate the XBOX just fine. I did and it works like a charm. Every button on the remote for my new Sony works exactly like it should. Now I have one remote for TV, Xbox, everything. I love that!!
