4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Pictures   December 17, 2002

Personally I have no objection to paying a little extra for DVD playback capability, especially when it's [reasonably priced]. ...DVD playback quality is decent enough and most of the standard DVD features are there. I agree with a previous reviewer that having to use the menu system rather than remote buttons for some advanced features can be a pain but, in all honesty, they are not features that I use often.

One caveat: the infra-red receiver that plugs into the game port also includes the region setting that the DVD player uses, based on where the DVD kit was purhased. The first time you plug a receiver in, the region setting is stored internally in the XBox and CANNOT BE CHANGED. So trying to multi-region by buying multiple kits from different countries will not work. There are hacks available, but they are not simple and require modifying the XBox's internal hardware.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BUT DON'T PAY MORE THAN 29.99   November 25, 2001

THIS DVD PLAYBACK UNIT IS A GREAT ACCESSORY TO THE XBOX GAME CONSOLE BUT IT'S NOT WORTH MORE THAN THE LIST PRICE OF $29.99. DON'T PAY MORE THAN $29.99 FOR IT. I HAVE SEEN THIS DVD UNIT FOR SALE ON THE INTERNET FOR UP TO $100.00 AND PEOPLE CLAIM ITS HARD TO FIND. YES, IT IS HARD TO FIND BUT IF YOU KEEP LOOKING YOU WILL FIND ONE FOR THE LIST PRICE OF $29.99. I FOUND MINE AT CIRCUITCITY.COM AND I PAID $29.99. PLEASE DON'T SUPPORT THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE TRYING TO RIP US OFF BY PAYING MORE THAN $29.99. THANK YOU FOR REVIEW MY THOUGHTS AND GOOD LUCK.

I see a lot of reviews here that condem MS for making this controller a seperate add on. The truth is that if you are serious about using the DVD functionality that you would likely buy a remote anyway (even on the PS2). Additionally, there are licenses that need to be paid to the developers of the X-box's dvd playback software. I personally applaud MS for making this add on seperate. If I don't want to watch DVD's on my X-box then I don't have to pay for something I'm not going to use to subsidize those who will.

On the usability front, while it isn't perfect, I find the remote ergonomically acceptable and easy to use. It provides easy access to the features you're going to use 99% of the time and access to the other features (zoom etc.) via online menus.

We'll be adding even more exciting features to assist you in the coming year.
