1 out of 5 stars Only remote...so...you're stuck with it...   April 9, 2002

Why 1 star? Because you need it. Otherwise you can not use DVDs on your X-Box. I do not understand how Microsoft can release such a simple remote. This isn't a remote control, it's a toy that belongs with the likes of Little Tikes. Remote controls represent manhood, this item represents Happy Meals.

Look at Sony's "official" remote control for the PS2. Look at the button options. Why did Microsoft feel that they should produce such a simple product? Onscreen menus instead of button selections?

I feel cheated. I even called the X-Box help desk and inquired about a good remote control and was treated with: "That is the final product. There will be no other option. Maybe a second generation company will produce one you are satisfied with."

I eventually broke down and got a real DVD player even though I already had this.

The X-Box would not play my Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers Extended Edition DVD. It would play on my computer and it plays on my new DVD player but it would not play on my X-Box. I've also had some problems with DVD's skipping/stuttering that I haven't had on my new dedicated DVD player.

I think it's just that the DVD drive the X-Box uses is cheap, so you might run into some problems.

If you really want to watch a lot of movies, I suggest getting a seperate player that was built with DVD viewing in mind. However, the X-Box will play 99% of DVD's just fine, so for this price you wouldn't be amiss to have this for a multi-TV family where the parents want to watch Gone With the Wind and the kids would rather watch pretty much anything on the other TV.

If you're just hoping this will save you some cash, don't say I didn't warn you! Now and then you might find you rented a movie that your X-Box has problems with but a real DVD player wouldn't.

1 out of 5 stars It doesn't make sense   November 10, 2001

Why should you have to pay for this just to use a DvD player? The system has a DvD player in it but they decide to make you buy this to be able to use it. What if it's lost? Many people loose remotes. A normal DVD player can be found really cheap now, so why pay (this includes the system and the game) for a same quality player?

This remote should come with the unit which already has a DVD player as a part of the standard unit. Making customers pay extra for functionality of an included item sounds just like Microsoft. Not even 3 stars but 2 1/2.
