Excellent Reception and Functionality March 4, 2008 Courtney Mann (Raleigh, NC) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Recently, my boyfriend and I decided to get an AT&T family plan and we chose these phones due to the fact that they had the best features of all of the AT&T phones, other then the iPhone of course. I own the white, and he owns the gray. The W580i has great reception, an FM radio, mp3 and video functionality with a memory card, 2 megapixel camera, mobile messaging, bluetooth, and comes with its own head phones which function as a head set. I've never been happier with the functionality and reception of my phone at the same time. For the price here, I'd take this phone over the iPhone any day, keeping in mind that I don't need a phone with extensive internet capabilities. The only issue I can see with the phone is that the key pad is relatively small. It's probably a good idea to check one out in a store if you think this might be an issue for you. Additionally, My boyfriend and I have had the phones for over 4 months now and we've had no issues with the durability. I keep reading reviews on how these phones feel cheap and the keypads break, but it just hasn't been the case with our two at all. Our first impression was that the phones *felt* like they weren't durable. But, experience has shown that the ones we own are. And to be honest, I drop my phone *a lot*. The battery cover popped off once or twice but I popped it back on. I love this phone.
nice and cool December 7, 2007 waterflowers (Irvine, CA United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It's the first time that I tried a slider from Sony Ericsson. Cool design, bright color, small size and light weight. Looks good and feels well - like it a lot! The only thing is that even though I chose "open to answer", calls are picked up or go out unintentionally when the outside button is touched by stuff in the pocket/handbag. It is annoying still. Other than that, great phone!
I love my new Sony Ericsson W580i phone January 7, 2008 Natalie J. Perry 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I absolutely love my new phone. There are so many features I didn't even know about before I purchased it. I had a few problems at first getting the SIM card installed correctly, but after calling Sony customer service I got some good instructions and it has worked perfectly ever since. Everyone should get this phone!
Beautiful phone with great interface, excellent all-round quality January 23, 2008 I C booklover (Sacramento, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have the white version of this phone and I couldn't be happier. It's not a smart phone, but it performs exceptionally well on everything it's supposed to. CALL QUALITY: This is an important aspect for me because it is a phone after all! Call quality is great. Not as good as a land line, but voices are plenty loud and very clear. I'm a little hard of hearing, and the volume is good enough for me. So long as you have a good signal (which my phone has no trouble finding), you'll be pleased. MUSIC PLAYER: The music player is the real highlight of this phone. I was using a Creative Zen mp3 player and the sound out of my W580 is just as good. The interface is pretty simple and doesn't have as many functions as a stand-alone player, but the interface is still very intuitive and gets the job done. The included ear-buds are sound-isolating and produce excellent sound: deep base and rich, clear tones across all pitches. I installed a 4GB memory card which holds about 750 of my mp3's. With the excellent sound quality and decent storage capacity, this phone has replaced my stand-alone mp3 player. CAMERA: It's only a 2 megapixel with no flash and autofocus, so the camera isn't as good as it could be. But it takes great pictures in good lighting. The color and sharpness of the pictures is right on, and quality is good enough for printing. Don't expect too much in poor lighting; in night mode, you have to hold your hand very still and hope your subject is also very still. The lack of autofocus makes close-ups difficult as well. But for typical use in good lighting, the camera performs admirably. MESSAGING: Messaging is smooth and intuitive. The lack of a qwerty keyboard doesn't bother me, as the intelligent-tap system works very well. It guesses much better than the itap on the RAZR I recently used. Many users have complained about the keys cracking and splitting, but I haven't had this problem. I've only had the phone for a couple weeks, though, so maybe long-term use will reveal a problem. DISPLAY: The display is fabulous! 320x240 resolution in only a 2" display means the screen is very smooth-looking and very easy on your eyes. Colors are vibrant and accurate. CONSTRUCTION: The phone is very light-weight, yet still feels well constructed. The slider mechanism is smooth and solid. There is a small wobble when the phone is fully open, which has been a minor annoyance. All-around, I'm very happy with this phone and would highly recommend it, especially if you're tired of carrying around a separate phone, camera, and mp3 player!
fun, small, cute, but texting is a little unwieldy February 7, 2008 science teacher (West Covina, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just got this phone about 2 weeks ago and also switched from T-mobile to AT&T. The only problem I've had with the phone is an issue with the SIM card not going in all the way when I tried to install it. Note that it is almost impossible to remove the SIM card once you insert it. AT&T Customer Service told me to take it to a store and have the phone replaced, but I just kept trying and eventually got it to work. I discovered that I should have pushed the SIM card in more firmly than I did initially. I had to use my fingernail to push it in the thin slot. If you just tap the SIM card into the slot with your finger tip, it might not be in far enough. I haven't used the music, walkman, or bluetooth functions yet although I plan to. I don't plan on using the camera for taking pictures. I got a Canon SD1000 for that. The battery lasts me about 5 days and I talk maybe 2 hours or less total during that time but text a lot and leave the phone on the whole time. I agree with some reviews about the phone being slow to use for text. I had a motorola v360 for 2 years that was super fast for sending text messages, but maybe once I transition completely, I'll get faster at it. One shortcut I learned is to just press the "up arrow" side of the circular navigation button to jump to message creation. Also if you press and hold the back key (little backwards curving arrow), you can jump back to the 'desktop' screen. One really nice thing is that the voice mail options for AT&T are pretty similar (identical so far) to the T-mobile ones which made it super easy for me to transition in that respect. This phone also allows you to block any number not on a user-specified list {Settings | Profiles | | More | View And Edit | Accept Calls}. I like this so I don't waste minutes picking up calls from people not in my contact list during the day. You can save this setting to one profile (maybe "work") and not to another one (maybe "home"), so you have some flexibility if you don't care who calls you after 9 PM, for example. I could not do that with my v360 so that is a feature I appreciate on this phone. And FYI: On the AT&T Set Up instruction sheet that Amazon packages with the phone they publish the wrong number for AT&T customer service. (it's the single page with all the info for all the different carriers) I looked it up online instead.
