5 out of 5 stars Super Solution - works Terriffic   November 20, 2006

I had the choice of finding a better hands free device, or buying a new car with integrated Blue Tooth for my Blackberry. I opted for the BlueAnt portable Hands Free Supertooth II. I paired the unit promptly. Having used many differnt blue tooth headsets, (Oakly/Motorola Sunglases, Plantronics, etc) I found the Supertooth to pair easily, and works terrific. With the Blackberry you have to press the connect button on the Supertooth when you first enter the vehicle to have it recognized by the Blackberry, but once connected, it is very reliable and the sound quality is fantastic. Charge lasts for a week on the road, and about 20 hours of talk time. The benefit of the Supertooth is you can take it into your office or home and have a high quality speakerphone should you need to do a conference call from your cell. - if you want to move away from a headset and still have hands free in your car, consider the Supertooth II. It's a great solution.

The BlueAnt Supertooth II is an excellent tool for talking on the phone in the car. It is clear, loud, and simple to use. It is the perfect compliment to my RAZR.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars BlueAnt Supertooth II   April 19, 2007

I have been trying to find a hands free device that I could use in my car that wouldn't require professional installation. For my purposes I had narrowed it down to 2...the Supertooth II and the Parrot Minikit.

Unfortunately the Parrot minikit was elusive...even after ordering it it was delayed. And after reading about the Parrot, it seemed I would have to program it for voice commands, and probably the nail in the coffin for eliminating the Parrot was that I found their forums. There were lots of posts with questions, and 4 moderators for the forum listed. But I could only find 2 direct answers from moderators to the technical questions. How hard is it to respond to a post for a product you are selling? This is poor support and not a good way to start.

So I bought the BlueAnt Supertooth II. I was able to pair my phone very easily (VZW LG Chocolate 8500), however I'm one of the unfortunate users that has to not only open the microphone boom, but I also have to then press the "answer" button for the bluetooth connection to take. Because of this, if I forget to connect to my phone when I get in the vehicle, it is hard to get calls through the device. However, last night I was playing with the Supertooth with my Motorola V3C and it works exactly as expected. Open the microphone and it connects and is ready to go with keypad dialing, voice commands or receiving calls. Since I'm getting ready to purchase a new phone and it will be a Motorola, I'm holding out hope it works as well as the V3C. I can live with the chocolate connection for another 5 days.

I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality of how I sound to others. I've been testing the kit by calling my work voicemail while on the road. I do not have the quietest vehicle (CR-V) and cabin noise has always been a problem both for me hearing someone else, as well as them hearing me. The speaker built into the cell phone has never worked well because of this. And in the past, even optional plug in speakers have not worked well.

I am happy to report that that is not the case with the Supertooth II. I have left myself voicemail messages from a dead stop to going 55 miles per hour over a concrete bridge, and I can not tell when I listen to the VM! All I hear is my voice, with maybe a tiny bit of background noise that canceled out after a few seconds. I am truly pleased!

I can also hear over the speaker pretty well. I haven't tested this as much as calling out as I haven't had the device that long to have a lengthy conversation with anyone. But the few short calls I have had have worked just fine.

I have my device on the top of the visor instead of where all the pictures show it (they show it on the side facing into the cabin). I prefer this as it keeps it more out of view of passers by, and could be mistaken for a garage door opener since you can't see the entire device. I open the microphone when I get in the car to make the connection and if I make or receive a call I simply pull the visor down a touch to bring the microphone a little closer. This works great for me, and I've found that if I leave the visor all the way up, the speaker actually sounds a little louder with no distortion. With the visor all the way up my voice does not sound quite as good to the caller, however speaking up a touch louder or moving the microphone down a touch more fixes the problem easily. And for me, I don't mind having the visor "partially" down.

This is a great device and I'm so glad to see someone selling a device that does a good job and doesn't require professional installation. I haven't had a chance to thoroughly test the battery life on it but the numbers in the specs are incredible. If it lives up to those I'll be more than impressed.

The only thing I mark it down on is I wish it took mini USB for a charger. My motorola phone does, as well as my GPS...so it would have been nice to have this device use the same charger. I'm actually considering paying an install shop to run a dedicated power cord so I can use it for any of my devices without having to use the lighter socket or have visible cords all over the cabin, but the fact that this device takes a regular DC cable is making me hesitate. It would be worthwhile to make the investment if all my car electronics used the same connection, but having one use something different is causing me to wait. I did find a converter that looks like it would take the DC and convert it to mini USB, but I'm not certain if the flow of electricity is going the right direction. I'm going to look into that and if the converter I found would work, I will definitely invest in having the power hard wired.

All-in-all I think this is a great device and for only $100 (or less) and can be easily moved from vehicle to vehicle (think travel), I don't see how it can be beat.

5 out of 5 stars Good product vs the others   April 7, 2007

I compared the BlueAnt with the Motorola models but the battery life got me sold. You can pair up to two phones with the device. Range is good. The 1st call you make/receive may take an extra second or two to sync but after that, it connects instantly. The clip on the visor may leave footprints on leather surfaces. So I use double sided velcro. You will be happy.

5 out of 5 stars I love this thing   June 17, 2007

It's a little big but I can't tell you how handy it is to have handsfree with a 200hour stand-by...Oh wait, yes I can...I'll use this review forum!

So the BlueAnt Supertooth II is a great piece of hardware. The speaker is very clear, the microphone is in a great strategic place and having it on the visor is ideal. Callers never complain or ask if they are on speaker phone which is a positive thing for me.

The battery life is stunning too. I went two weeks w/o having to charge this unit. Granted, I don't make that many calls in the car, but when I do, it's easy and fun to do! I love the handsfree much better than the ear pieces. I hate looking like a dork with that junk in my ear. Don't get me wrong though, those are still SAFER than holding a phone to your ear.

Taking a call in the car is never really ideal, but when you do, handsfree is so much safer. I can tell that my brain is still focused on driving when I get a call.

I rigged this unit in such a way that the ear bud is always on stand-by so when the boss calls and asks if the forum is private, I can plug the included ear piece in and have it loaded in <5 seconds w/o distraction. SLICK!

Setting it up with my Blackberry 8800 was a cinch. The phone knew the right settings and everything just worked. I liked that the Supertooth configured itself so that when I initiate, it defaults to voice dialing. NICE touch BlueAnt!

So on to the deficiencies...The unit's visor clip is set to a specified thickness that was too thin for my car! It still sorta-worked but I was bummed when I slid the clip on and it was too thin. That makes the unit less level and more invasive to the cabin. I tried to bend it but those clips are insanely thick! Not a deal breaker but my visors don't seem that different to me. I imagine if your car visor has a mirror with lights, it might be too thick. Just a guess...Now the other annoyance: When I walk away, the bluetooth connection breaks as it should. When I come back, the connection does not. This is normal, but the only way I figured out to reconnect is to push the main button on the Supertooth. Each time I do that, the bluetooth connection comes back but then it engages my voice-dial system on my phone (as it should, really but how else should I reconnect the bluetooth?)

Those are such MINOR things to me that I cannot give this <5 stars. It rocks....If you want a sweet speakerphone system for your auto, this is the one.
